Net Zero 2040
We have set a goal to be Net Zero by 2040. We are the first telecommunications company in New Zealand to achieve validation for our Net Zero 2040 target from global corporate climate action organisation, Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
The road to Net Zero demands more than simply lowering our own carbon footprint. It requires reducing our own emissions, helping customers lower theirs and supporting our partners to do the same.
Reaching Net Zero requires a 90% reduction of our greenhouse gas emissions from our FY22 benchmark and investment in initiatives to balance out the rest. In late 2024 our Net Zero target was externally verified by the SBTi.
Our Science Based Targets include
SCOPE 2 EMISSIONS
Radio access network (RAN) efficiency programme
In FY24, our RAN efficiency program with Ericsson won the TUANZ Technology Initiative of the Year award, recognising our efforts to modernise the network and improve energy efficiency. In FY25, we continued this partnership to deliver an energy-efficient 5G network across Aotearoa, expanding power-saving features such as Intelligent Power-Off to achieve measurable reductions in energy use.
SCOPE 2 EMISSIONS
Energy efficiency measures in our retail stores
We extended energy-saving initiatives across our corporate retail stores, making sustainability a core part of how we design, operate, and use our spaces. All corporate stores now follow updated guidelines, including energy-efficient technology, timed signage and TV screens, motion sensors, HVAC controllers, and preset equipment. These upgrades, along with strong staff engagement, helped reduce electricity usage across our stores by 15% in FY25 compared to FY24. Results so far have been promising and show that small changes rolled out nationally can deliver significant savings.
